An extremist is a person who holds far-out political or religious views and is ready to do unusual or even illegal things to get what they want. The noun is about the person; the same word can describe ideas (extremist views). In careful talk it is a strong label — not a for someone you argue with online. In messy talk, people throw it around, and that is how the word gets thin. Formal news still means: this person has gone past ordinary into something most people will not accept.
