To expend something is to use it up — energy, time, effort, money, resources — usually a large amount, and usually for a purpose. It is a formal verb, and it is the word English reaches for when the thing being used up is not just money: 'she expended a great deal of energy on a problem nobody cared about', 'the army had expended most of its ammunition'. Two things are worth noticing. First, 'expend' quietly says the thing is gone; that is why 'expendable' means something (or, , someone) that can be used up and thrown away without much loss. Second, when the object is plain money, everyday English prefers 'spend' — 'expend' there sounds like an accountant is in the room. In fact 'spend' and 'expend' are the same Latin word arriving in English by two different roads, which is why they feel like twins with different jobs. The noun is 'expenditure', and 'expenses' — the money you spend for work — belongs to the same family.
