An executioner is a person whose job is to kill someone after a court has said they must die. In older times this was a public job, often done with a rope or an axe, and people sometimes knew the executioner's name. Today very few countries still have this work, and when they do, the person is usually a prison worker whose name is kept quiet. The word feels heavy and a little old. News reports more often say 'the person who carried out the execution.' People also stretch it in dark jokes — 'My boss is an executioner in meetings' — meaning they kill ideas, not people. That is humour, not the real job. Do not mix this word with , which looks similar but is a totally different kind of work.
