Excision is the name for cutting something out, or for the piece that has been cut out. The word itself is a noun, even though the idea is an action: doctors talk about the excision of a lump, meaning they cut that tissue out of the body. Editors and censors use it more loosely when a scene or a paragraph is taken out of a text. You will mainly meet it in medical, scientific, or quite formal writing; in ordinary talk people say removal, cutting out, or surgery. The matching verb is often excise. Though actually, excision can sound colder than “take out,” because it keeps the picture of a clean cut, not a gentle lift.
組成From Middle French excision, from Latin excīsiō: a cutting-out. The front piece is ex- (“out”).
