An incision is a neat, deliberate cut into something — most often the cut a doctor makes in the skin during an operation. It is a clean line, not a tear, a , or a bite. After surgery people talk about “the incision” the way they talk about a place on the body: it may be sore, it may need stitches, and the scar later follows that line. The word can also be used outside medicine for a similar careful cut, for example in craft or science, but will meet it first in hospitals. It names the cut itself, not the whole operation. Formal, precise English. In casual talk a patient may still just say “the cut.”
