Exactitude is the state of being exact — getting it right down to the small points. A scientist might work with great exactitude; a tailor might cut with exactitude. It is a rather formal, slightly French-flavoured noun, more at home in careful writing than in chat. In ordinary talk, people say accuracy, precision, or just being exact. It does not mean “being strict with people” (that is closer to exacting). It means the quality of matching the true measure, with little or no slack.

組成From French exactitude, from exact, from Latin exactus, from exigō (“weigh, test, demand as due”), itself from ex (“out”) + agō (“drive”). The French ending -itude is “the state of being.”
