An exacting person, job, or standard asks a lot of you — careful work, skill, patience, and no sloppy corners. An exacting teacher checks every . An exacting recipe wants the grams right. It often sounds a little : the standard is high, not merely nasty. Though actually, it can also feel heavy, like a boss who is never pleased. It comes from the verb exact, which can mean “demand and take,” so exacting still carries that “this will be demanded of you” feel. More common in writing and careful speech than in playground talk.
