If you are even-handed, you treat people fairly and do not quietly favour one side. A teacher who marks two students by the same rules, a news report that gives both sides room, a parent who does not always take the older child’s word — those are even-handed. Even here means level, not tilted. Handed is not about your left or right hand; it is a picture: you do not give one person a heavier hand than the other. The word is a little formal, common in writing about judges, referees, journalists, and bosses. It does not mean you have no opinion. You can think one side is wrong and still be even-handed in how you listen, how you apply the rules, and how much time you give. It is stronger than “nice” and more precise than “kind”: the point is fairness, especially when two sides are in conflict.
