You can picture a great stretch of land that one person 'stands on' as theirs — held, owned, under their name. The word comes from the same root as 'state' and 'status': one's standing, what one holds. From that picture of held property grow the two branches: the whole of what someone owns (especially what they leave behind when they die), and a planned block of land built up all of one kind.
