Ere means before. It is an old word. You will meet it in poems, in the Bible, in stories that want an old-fashioned sound: ere dawn, ere long, ere he spoke. It can sit before a time-word (ere morning) or before a whole clause (ere the sun rose). Nobody uses it in ordinary talk now; before and until do that work. If you put it in a school essay about your weekend, it will sound like costume. Though actually, that is the point in literature — the writer is choosing the old coat on purpose. It is not the same word as era (a stretch of history), and not a spelling of error.

組成From Old English ǣr, “before / earlier,” a comparative of an old word for “early.” The same root sits behind English early. Erstwhile keeps the old superlative ǣrest, “earliest.”
