An encampment is a large temporary camp, especially one used by soldiers. It is the place itself — the tents, the , the people living there for a while — not the act of putting the tents up. An encampment can last days or months, but it is not meant to be a town. Historians and journalists use the word; so do people talking about protest camps or refugee camps, though soldier camps are the oldest picture. It is a fairly formal noun. Camp is the simple everyday word; encampment sounds bigger and more organised.
