To encamp is to set up a camp, or to put people into a camp — most often soldiers. They stop, they put up tents or other simple shelter, and they stay there for a time, not in a town and not in a lasting building. Armies encamp before a fight, beside a river, or on a hill. The word is a little old-fashioned and quite formal; in everyday talk people more often say set up camp or make camp. You will still meet encamp in history books and in news about troops. Though actually, it is not only soldiers. and other groups can encamp too, but the army picture is the one the word carries most strongly.
