To embitter someone is to make them bitter inside — angry, sad, or full of hate — because of bad or unfair things that have happened to them. This word is a verb: something does this to a person. A long fight, a broken promise, or years of unfair treatment can embitter someone. After that they may find it hard to trust, and even kind words bounce off. People use it in writing and serious talk more than in everyday chat. Though actually we often skip the verb and jump to the result: we say someone is embittered, rather than “life embittered them.” The feeling is not a short bad mood; it sits for a long time.
