Bitterness is a strong, sharp taste — the opposite of sweet — the kind of taste you get from very dark coffee, some medicine, or the white skin under an orange peel. But most of the time, when people talk about people rather than food, bitterness means a deep, lasting feeling of anger and disappointment, usually because something unfair happened and you can't let it go. Someone who lost a job might carry real bitterness about it for years — it's heavier and longer-lasting than simple anger.
