組成From Anglo-Norman aloper ('to abduct, run away'), borrowed from a West Germanic verb meaning 'to run away'. It matches an old prefix and- ('away') plus lope ('run'). The same old running-word also gave leap; lope and leap are doublets — two English children of one parent.
