Elopement is the noun: the act of leaving home secretly in order to get married, or the secret wedding that follows. News and stories talk about an elopement the way they talk about a wedding — as an event you can date and remember — only this one was not for the family. The feeling is the same as with : a mix of romance, hurry, and someone being left out. In ordinary conversation people may just say they ran off and got married; elopement sounds a little more like a headline or a history book. Though actually, it still names that one kind of leaving, not running away in general, and not a planned wedding that happens to be small.
