1. 1

To egosurf is to go on the internet and look up your own name, to see how many pages mention you. People do it out of curiosity, pride, or worry about their name. It is informal web talk, a little joking — as if you were surfing, but the wave is yourself. You will meet it in magazines and blogs more than in serious essays, and not everyone knows the word. Many people just say they googled themselves. It is not a crime and not always vanity: writers, teachers, and job-hunters do it to see what a stranger would find. Still, the joke in the word is that you are hunting for yourself.

    搜自己的名字;台灣人常直接說「Google 自己」。

egosurfverb

  • 1

To search the Internet for references to one's name or works in order to gratify one's ego.

    • My little sister Pixie was on the computer. As is the custom, I moaned at her to get off (feigning non-existent A-level work I had to do "before it's too late"), then noticed a page full of pictures of her. "Hah! Ego-surfing again, are we?" I cried jubilantly.
