If a metal is ductile, you can press it or pull it into a new shape — especially into wire — without heating it until it melts, and without it snapping. Gold and copper are famous for this: they can be drawn out into very fine wire. Steel can be ductile too, depending on how it is made. The tidy classroom opposite is brittle (it breaks). You also meet malleable (you can hammer it into a sheet). Though actually, in real workshops the two ideas overlap, and speakers are not always careful. There is a quieter, more sense: a ductile person is easy to lead or easy to persuade. That sense sits closer to the Latin (“easily led”), but you will meet the metal sense far more in school science.
