A dressmaker is a person who sews clothes, especially women’s clothes made to fit — dresses, skirts, jackets — rather than factory sizes off a rack. Some people sew only for themselves; the word can cover that, but the usual picture is someone who does it as a job, often from a small shop or a room at home.
