A draper is a person who sells cloth — the kind you buy by the piece to make clothes, curtains, or covers for furniture. In older British towns this was a common shop, like a baker or a butcher: you went to the draper’s for fabric. Though actually, you will not see many shop signs that say draper now. People say fabric shop or curtain shop instead. The word still turns up in history books, in films set in the past, and as a family name: Draper started as the job someone did. It feels British and a little old. Americans are more likely to say fabric store.
