If you are downwind, you are in the direction the wind is moving. Smoke, smell, and sound travel that way. Stand downwind of a barbecue and you will smell the food; stand the other way and you may smell nothing. care about this because smoke blows downwind; farmers care because spray and smell do too. You can say downwind of the factory, or the smoke blew downwind. It is a practical word, not a fancy one.
