Downriver means in the direction the river water is already going — toward the mouth, toward the sea, away from the hills where the river starts. You can go downriver by boat, or talk about a town downriver from here. The opposite is upriver. It works as an adverb (they drifted downriver) and as an adjective (downriver villages). Downstream is almost the same idea; downriver just names a river, not a stream. Though actually “down” here does not mean south. A river can flow north; downriver still follows the current.
