If you go downstream, you go the same way the water in a river or stream is already flowing — usually away from the hills and toward the sea. A town downstream from a factory gets the water after the factory has used it, so people worry about what is in that water. You can say a downstream village, or the boat drifted downstream. Though actually people stretch it: in business and science, downstream can mean later in a process, after the first steps. The home meaning is still the river.
