Holding two opposite ideas in your head at the same time and treating both as true — even when they cannot both be true. George Orwell coined it in 1949, from double + think, as part of the Newspeak in Nineteen Eighty-Four. In the book the Party trains you to believe things like “war is peace” and not feel the crack; you are not allowed to notice that the two ideas fight. The sense here calls that dishonest, and in the book it is: the mind is being used against itself. People now also use the word a little more loosely, for any time someone talks as if two opposite things were both fine. It is a noun, and sometimes a verb (to doublethink). A serious, word — , essays, arguments, not the supermarket.
