A dork is someone you think is silly, awkward, or — the clothes, the jokes, or the way they care too much about something that is not fashionable. It is informal American English, the kind of word teenagers and sitcoms use. It can be . Friends also say it with a smile: “I’m such a dork” means “I did something , or I was too keen.” It is weaker, and more about social awkwardness, than calling someone stupid in the school-test sense. You would not put it in a formal essay. Though actually, older speakers may hear it as ruder than young people do. It first shows up in the United States around 1961. It probably started as a softer stand-in, in student slang (especially in the Midwest), for a rude word for a penis. It has never specially meant a whale’s penis, even though that story gets repeated. Another, less certain idea links it to a Norwegian dialect word dorg, for a heap or a heavy, slow person. Use it with people your own age, not to a stranger’s face unless you are sure they will laugh.
組成American slang, first seen around 1961. It presumably began as a milder swap for a rude body-part word in student talk. A less certain idea derives it from Norwegian dialect dorg, “a mass; a heavy, dim-witted person.” It does not split into English pieces you can usefully teach.
