Doncaster is an industrial town in South Yorkshire, in northern England. It grew with coal, railways, and workshops. Once a year it is famous far beyond Yorkshire because of the St Leger, a classic horse race run there. The name is older than the factories: the first part is the old name of the local river (the Don), and the second part is an Old English ending for a town, the same kind of ending you hear in Chester and Manchester. So the name is, roughly, 'the town on the Don'. It is not a county, and it is not in Scotland.
