    In music, dissonance is a combination of sounds that feels unpleasant, clashing, or unresolved - the opposite of harmony. Some composers use dissonance on purpose to create tension in a piece of music. The word is also used figuratively: 'cognitive dissonance' is the uncomfortable feeling you get when you believe two conflicting things at once, or when your actions don't match your own beliefs. More generally, dissonance can just mean a lack of agreement or a clash between things.
