To dissimulate is to hide what you really feel or really mean to do, often by putting on a false face — and sometimes by lying. It is a formal, rather old-fashioned word. In ordinary talk, people say hide your feelings, pretend, or (a close cousin) dissemble. You dissimulate when you smile at someone you do not trust, or when you act calm while you are planning to leave. It is not the same as simulate: simulate is to copy something (a machine can simulate rain); dissimulate is to cover the truth about yourself. Teachers and novels like it; group chats almost never do.

組成From Latin dissimulātus / dissimulō, “to conceal, to pretend”, from dissimilis (“unlike”). English also inherited a close twin, dissemble, from the same Latin root.
