A disproof is something that shows a claim is wrong or not true — evidence, an argument, or a result that knocks the idea down. The tidy line “to show that something is wrong” is really the verb disprove; disproof is the noun: the showing, or the proof that goes against. In science and in careful argument, people look for a disproof: one clear counter-example can be a disproof of a big claim. It is a formal, classroom-and-paper word. Everyday English more often uses proof that it is wrong, evidence against, or the verb disprove. Though actually, proof usually supports an idea; disproof walks the other way — same family, opposite job.
