A disjunctive conjunction is a joining word that does not simply add two ideas together. It holds them apart and asks you to choose, or it sets them in opposition. The clean example is or: You can have soup or salad is not offering both as one happy pile; it is a fork in the path. In a grammar book, or is the star disjunctive conjunction. Though actually, almost nobody uses the label except teachers and tests. People just say or. And is the opposite kind of joining word: it piles things together. But sits in the middle: it joins two ideas while pushing them against each other, and some grammar books call that contrast disjunctive too. Outside grammar, a few writers use disjunctive to mean pulling apart or not sitting well together, but if you are learning the word from a dictionary, start with or and the idea of choice or opposition.
