The line above sounds like a verb, but discontinuance is a noun: the act or fact of stopping something that used to go on. You meet it when a company, a court, or an official process brings something to an end. In American legal English it has a special life — the discontinuance of a lawsuit means the case is dropped. Outside law it sounds stiff and a little old. Most people say discontinuation, or simply they stopped it. You would not tell a friend about the discontinuance of your piano lessons.
