This adverb says that something happens in a way that makes you feel slightly confused, , or worried. Writers often put it before an adjective — disconcertingly calm, disconcertingly honest, disconcertingly young — to say that the quality itself is what throws you. The calm should comfort you; though actually it does the opposite, because it is not the calm you expected. It is formal to neutral. You will meet it in journalism and essays more than in chat.
