- 1
Someone who is disconcerted has already been thrown off a little. They feel slightly confused, , or worried, and it often shows: a pause, a flush, a lost sentence. It is the -ed form of , used of the person (not of the thing that caused it). You can be disconcerted by a question, a silence, a smile that does not fit, or a piece of news. The feeling is mild but real; they have not fallen apart — they have just lost their smooth front. Fairly formal; everyday English might say taken or thrown.

Baronet. I was perhaps somewhat disconcerted at the discovery that, although I had not expected to speak at all, I should have in reply to cover so wide an area; but still more disconcerted was I to find taht the whole speech of the right hon.
