    A disclaimer is the statement itself — the words that say “we are not responsible,” “this is not our view,” or “I do not know about this.” You meet it at the end of an (“results may not be typical”), at the start of a programme, and in contracts in tiny print. Companies love disclaimers because they hope the words will protect them if something goes wrong. Though actually, a disclaimer is not a magic shield: a court may still decide the company is responsible. In everyday talk people also joke “disclaimer: this is only my opinion,” which is a light, unofficial use of the same idea.
