    Diminution is a rather formal word for a reduction — when the size, the number, or the amount of something goes down. Official writing likes it: a diminution of rights, a diminution in value, a diminution of risk. In ordinary talk, people say reduction, decrease, or drop instead; if you use diminution with friends, it will sound stiff, as if you have swallowed a law book. Keep it for essays, reports, and careful argument. Music people also use it for a trick where a tune is played in shorter, quicker notes, but that is a specialist sense; the everyday learned sense is simply “a ”.
