In music, a diminuendo is a stretch where the sound grows slowly quieter. Players see the Italian word on the page, or a long mark like a hairpin that starts wide and grows thin, and they take the volume down little by little — not a sudden stop. You can also use it as an instruction: play this diminuendo, meaning “get quieter as you go”. The opposite idea is crescendo, when the music grows louder. English borrowed the word from Italian and still treats it as a music word; in ordinary talk people just say get quieter.
