A dictator is a leader who has total control over a country, usually took power by force rather than a fair election, and does not allow people to disagree. It's a strongly negative word, almost always used to criticize a ruler as unfair and dangerous. People also use it loosely, half-joking, for a boss or family member who controls everything and won't listen to others.
