Dextrose is a simple sugar. Chemists also call this same sugar glucose — the 'right-handed' form of it. Your body uses it for quick energy. It occurs naturally in many sweet fruits and in honey, and makers put it into sweets, energy drinks, and some medicines (a drip in hospital is often dextrose in water). It tastes sweet, but it is not the same thing as table sugar (), which is two sugars joined together. On food labels you may see dextrose, glucose, or glucose syrup; they are close, and dextrose is the name that points to this particular right-handed sugar. The word is more at home in science, medicine, and ingredient lists than in kitchen talk — at home most people just say sugar.
組成dextro- ('right-handed') + -ose (the ending for a sugar). Named for the way this sugar turns light to the right.
