To desensitize someone is to make them react less strongly to something by getting them used to it. A clinic can desensitize a patient to a food or an insect sting. Hard days can desensitize a person too: after enough shouting, a child may stop crying. Writers use it about people who see too much pain on a screen and stop caring. A little formal, common in health and media talk. The -ize ending makes the verb: you desensitize a person, or sometimes yourself.
