1. 1

To democratize something is to change the way it is organized so that it is more democratic — more people share power, and fewer decisions belong to one ruler, one boss, or a closed group. You can democratize a government after a war, or a company, a political party, even a club. The thing you democratize is the system, not usually a single person. Though actually, this -ize verb is easy to use as a promise. Someone may say they will democratize while keeping the real power behind the scenes. Check what changed, not only what was said. It is a formal verb; you meet it in news and essays more than at the dinner table. British spelling is often democratise.
