1. 1

A demerger is the event or the plan: the splitting of one company so that a piece stands alone as a new company. After a demerger, the old big firm and the new smaller one are separate. Newspapers talk about “a demerger of the retail arm.” It lives in the same formal world as : money pages, lawyers, shareholders. In easy talk people say a company split, or breaking a company into parts. The extra de- is the “undo” piece on merger. A merger joins; a demerger takes apart what was joined — or cuts a piece out of a group that had been one.
