    To demerge is a business word. A large company has been one thing; now the people in charge split off a part and make that part into its own company. The opposite move is to merge: two companies become one. So demerge is merge, undone. You will almost only meet this in newspapers, company reports, and finance class. Ordinary people say split off or break up the company. Though actually, Latin has a verb demergo meaning “to sink under water.” That is not where this company word comes from. The English business verb is simply de- plus merge. It looks a little like emerge and submerge, which also have merge-like pieces, but those are about coming out or going under — not about companies.
