Deliverance is the state of having been saved from harm, danger, or — in church language — from evil or sin. It sounds old, serious, and often Biblical. Hymns, sermons, and older stories use it; a modern speaker talking about a fire or an accident would usually say rescue or we were saved. English deliver once commonly meant set free or save, and this noun kept that older sense, while delivery moved toward handing things over — a package, a speech, a baby. If you hear deliverance in a film title or a prayer, think rescue, not the post office.
