A deity is a god or a goddess. The word is a little formal and a little distant; children say god and goddess, while deity turns up in textbooks, museums, and careful talk about many religions at once (a Hindu deity, a Greek deity). It can mean one named figure. “The deity” can also mean God in a cool, formal way, as if the speaker is not using a personal name. People stretch it in criticism too: “He thinks he is a deity” means he acts as if he were one. It is not a person’s everyday name, and it has nothing to do with diet.
