Deism is a belief about God, not a church you join and not a person’s name. A deist says there is a god who made the world — the way a clockmaker makes a clock — but that this god does not step in afterwards: no miracles, no answered prayers, no holy book as God’s own voice. The world then runs by natural laws, and human lives are not steered from above. The idea was common among some in the 1600s and 1700s. It is not theism (a god who still acts in the world), and not (no god). You will meet the word in history, religion class, and philosophy much more than in the street.
