When you deify someone, you treat them as if they were a god: you put them so high that they can do no wrong. People do this with pop stars, sports heroes, and sometimes a boss or a leader. It is a strong, slightly formal word; in everyday talk someone might just say they treat him like a god. You can deify an idea too — to deify the market, or a flag, is to treat that thing as sacred and not to be questioned. The old literal sense is religious: to make a dead person into a god (Roman emperors were deified). Today the “treat like a god” sense is the one you will meet most, and it often carries a warning: this respect has gone too far.
