    In grammar, a declarative sentence has the shape of a statement. It tells you something. It is not asking (interrogative), not ordering (imperative), and not crying out (exclamative). “The door is open.” That is declarative. “Is the door open?” is not. Teachers use the word when they sort sentence types. The tone can still be strong or soft; what matters is the form: it is built as a telling, usually with a subject and a verb in statement order. You can turn the same idea into a question by changing the form; the meaning is close, but the sentence type has changed. The word is mainly a classroom and word. Programmers also talk about “declarative” style (you say what you want, not every step), and that is a different neighbourhood of the same idea — stating rather than commanding — though actually that use is later and more specialist. The grammar sense is the one meet first. Related to declare, but here you are not “declaring war”; you are just using statement form.
