Deceiving means making someone believe something that isn't true — tricking them on purpose. If you're deceiving someone, you're lying to them or hiding the truth to fool them. People also use "deceiving" for something that looks one way but is really another — like "appearances can be deceiving," meaning how something looks can trick you about what it really is.
