Deceit is behaviour meant to make someone believe what is not true. It is not always one small lie in passing; it is the trick, the covering-up, the plan behind the false story. A person can act with deceit, or a whole situation can be full of deceit. It is a little more formal and serious than lying or tricking, so you hear it in news, in law, and in talk about character. People stretch it in set phrases: a web of deceit is many lies tied together. Unlike a white lie told to spare feelings, deceit is meant to take something or to hide the truth on purpose — and it is always a bad thing.
