Decapitation is the act — or the result — of cutting off a head. Same idea as , but this one is the noun: the thing that happened. History books talk about execution by decapitation. News may talk about the “decapitation” of a terrorist group, meaning the leaders were killed or taken, not that heads were cut. The word itself is formal; the picture is grim. Use the verb when someone does the act, and this noun when you name the act.
